Most over-the-counter eye drops available today supplement the aqueous
layer only. These drops do nothing to restore the protective lipid
layer, leaving patients reaching for their eye drops time and again
throughout the day because the drops only provide short-term relief.
Soothe, from USA, is different in that it is one of only three products specifically for
relief from evaporative dry eye symptoms. (In Europe the innovative
Clarymist Spray has been shown to be
superior to Liposic Gel )
Soothe features an advanced lipid restorative,
Restoryl, that reduces harmful tear
evaporation and seals in essential moisture, giving patients up to a
claimed 8
hours of relief from discomfort.
What the manufacturers say.
Restoryl reinforces the outermost
lipid layer of the tear film as part of a meta-stable emulsion that
combines two highly refined mineral oils: Drakeol-15 and Drakeol-35. Once
applied to the eye, Soothe rapidly differentiates into:
Restoryl (Neutral Oils) - rapidly rebuilds the protective lipid layer
Interfacial molecules - work to attach the lipid layer to the
aqueous layer and support the mucin layer
Water - restores the aqueous layer of the tear film.
Smooth is a milky white solution and blurs
vision for two minutes. It is preserved, but not with the offending Benzylkonium
Chloride. Like all bottles it must be discarded after 28 days.
After
testing Soothe on evaporative dry eye patients I have
concluded Soothe is far less effective than Clarymist. I am therefore
discontinuing it.
