HOW IT'S MADE
Marigold flowers are harvested and flower petals are dried and grinded and then
extraction of oleoresin takes place using hexane as solvent. Solvent is
evaporated under high vacuum and low temperature, and Marigold oleoresin is
obtained. This concentrate is then treated with alkali and temperature to saponify the Lutein, by breaking the bond between Lutein
and the fatty acids, then isomerization of Lutein into Zeaxanthin is
performed. After these processes the concentrate is purified by a series of
extractions using hexane again to remove unwanted components, as waxes,
fatty acids, gums, etc. to obtain the pure crystals of either Lutein,
Meso Zeaxanthin or Zeaxanthin, The crystals are then weashed and dried.

MACUSHIELD™ with MZ is a new patented supplement containing Meso-Zeaxanthin (MZ)
for eye health researched and discovered by Dr. Richard Bone and Dr.
John Landrum, professors of the
Departments of Physics and Biochemistry respectively, at Florida
International University.
Bone and Landrum have
been investigating the macular pigment and its involvement with the
disease Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) for over two decades.
Bone and Landrum have demonstrated that the macular pigment is composed
of the three carotenoids; Lutein (L), Zeaxanthin (Z), and
Meso-Zeaxanthin (MZ). These carotenoids protect the macula because of
their antioxidant and light filtering properties.
In 2004 the LAST Study (Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial) showed that 10mg of L taken orally
augmented macula pigment and improved the vision of patients with macular
degeneration. However, research in 2006 indicates that
MZ may be more important than L in protecting against
macular degeneration. Bone and Landrum conducted autopsy research on donor eyes with AMD and
found MZ to be the most depleted of the three macular carotenoids in
patients with AMD.
MZ is found only in the central
macula where vision is sharpest and comprises 25% of the total
macula pigment. Unlike L which is
present in spinach and other green vegetables, and Z which is
the yellow pigment found in corn, MZ is not found in common food
sources. MZ is synthesized in most people’s bodies from L and it is now thought that some individuals may lack the converting enzyme.
Until now (Dec 2006) MZ has not been available as a single pill supplement.
Scientific research, ongoing at the Macular Pigment Research
Centre, in Waterford, Ireland, the largest research centre in Europe, ( click here )
shows that s ince MZ has been
introduced into a supplement, people have re-pigmented by
up to 40% in 140 days.
Scientists believe that people who
have a high intake of L and Z (from either diet or dietary
supplements) plus take supplemental MZ will have a very low
incidence of macular degeneration.
Unfortunately a product with the same name originates from Douglas
Laboratories (USA) but is chemically different, does not include any MZ and requires
swallowing 6 large capsules every day.
Macushield MZ is available in Europe from leading eye care specialists but not from pharmacies or
health food shops.
MacuShield is not
available on NHS prescription.
