Drug Actions

Bacteriostatic drugs simply slow down the replication rate of micro-organism (allowing the immune system to cope with existing loading). Bactericidical antibiotics actually kill the cells.

BROLENE

Bacteriostatic at low concentrations and bactericidal at high concentrations. Bacteriostatic efficacy is PH sensitive and reduced when tear PH is lowered in mild infection.

Brolene inserts itself between successive bases in bacterial DNA causing genetic mutation.

good -ve (pseudomonas)

CHLORAMPHENICOL

Bacteriostatic. Broadspectrum. highly lipophilic

Inhibits protein synthesis in bacterial by binding to the 50S subunit ribosome.

FRUSCIDIC ACID

Bacteriostatic. Better +

Also inhibits protein synthesis and binds to the 50S ribosome but has a mechanism of action slightly different to chloroamphenicol in that it interferes continually the the assembly of the polypeptide chain.

Fluoroquinolones

Ofloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase blocking DNA replication. Bacteriostatic.
